, ,Bennington College welcomes applications for a Technical Instructor in Sculpture and Visual Arts to support the curriculum, including supporting Visual Arts courses by giving material-specific demonstrations and safety procedures related to the woodshop and metalshop, assisting and overseeing any complex site-specific installations, as well as teaching two technical skills-oriented courses related to sculpture each year. The position is full-time, year-round.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting duties related to all Sculpture courses; material ordering, in-class technical support and management.
- Fabrication, technical design and building for College as a whole (buildings and grounds, CAPA, VAPA).
- Installation supervisor for outdoor sculpture.
- Supervising of Usdan Gallery crew and sometimes in direct relationship with visiting artists to the gallery to help design, assist in building for shows.
- Light shows in Usdan Gallery.
- Teaching two 2-credit technical skills-oriented courses related to sculpture each year.
- Maintain clear and up-to-date SDS booklet and Google Doc of all related materials in the Sculpture Department.
- Maintain that the wood shop tools and spaces are safe and working properly in the Sculpture department.
- Maintain that the metal shop tools and spaces are safe and working properly in the Sculpture department.
- Respond/assist with questions from students in the visual arts and others who have questions about mechanics, troubleshooting, and projects.
- Hire, mentor, and supervise monitors in the Wood shop (up to 7 Work Study Students).
- Hire, mentor, and supervise monitors in the Metal shop (up to 3 Work Study Students).
- Hire, mentor, and supervise monitors on BOSS Co2 laser (up to 2 Work Study Students).
- Sponsor up to 5 Independent Study Students over the entirety of Field Work Term.
- Keep up to date with material handling, SDS protocols, Fork truck regulation training by attending hazardous material and space courses to maintain certificates.
- Keep up to date with Fork truck regulations and certificate of operations.
- Perform other special projects or duties in support of sculpture and visual arts studio

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and technical production experience at the professional or collegiate level required; master's degree in sculpture or related field preferred.
- Certification in TIG, MIG, and gas welding preferred.
- Basic mechanical engineering understanding.
- Basic electronics understanding / arduino controllers, piston controls, and pneumatic systems.
- Mastery of woodworking techniques (joinery, construction methods)
- Plastic fabrication knowledge and safety practices.
- Experience training and managing students.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to work with a diverse student population, and inclusive practices.
- Demonstrated commitment to continued learning of issues, and practices of diversity and inclusion.
- A high regard for personal and work-place safety.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Google Suite.
- Proficient with Rhinoceros 3D CAD software and applications. (Rhino CAM)
- Proficient in Adobe illustrator and Photoshop.
- Successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
