Bennington College, a liberal arts institution known for its innovative approach to higher education, is seeking a Social Media Coordinator to join a dedicated team of communication professionals. This role focuses on building an online community through authentic, engaging content that enhances Bennington’s visibility. The ideal candidate will create high-value content tailored to resonate with key audiences, including prospective and current students. 

The Social Media Coordinator works with the Associate Director of Digital Marketing to serve as Bennington College’s central voice—and ear—in the social media landscape. Within the context of the College’s broader positioning strategy and goals, they will coordinate the organic content of our social media channels, report on social media analytics, balance quantitative and qualitative data to inform judgments, monitor social media trends, tools, and platforms to drive innovation and engage with audiences in real-time, fostering connections with prospective and current students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community.

The coordinator will work in collaboration with colleagues in Communications as well as in other offices, notably Admissions, Alumni Relations and Institutional Advancement, the President’s office, the Provost’s office, Student Life, and the Bennington Writing Seminars Masters in Fine Arts Writing program. This position works with College faculty, students, staff and alumni. External relations may include but are not limited to web developers, consultants, and technology representatives. The coordinator's work is to be performed on-site. 

General Responsibilities

Within the context of Bennington College’s positioning strategy and in support of its branding and marketing goals:

  1. Cultivate an authentic voice and discerning ear for Bennington College in social media; manage its primary institutional accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn, Threads, and Tik Tok).

  2. Ongoing assessment of what works in this space, reporting out, and adapting as needed. Working with the associate director of digital marketing to respond to conversations that are occurring and emerging among our constituents and those who influence them; identify opportunities to contribute to those discussions in ways that strengthen Bennington’s profile.

  3. Adapt and create multimedia stories, news, and original content for Bennington’s social media channels; coordinate with others in the communications office to encourage an organic flow of traffic across the College’s webscape and maximize impact of website content.

  4. Design and maintain reporting routines for social media analytics; regularly review and share lessons, trends, best practices, and blind spots in the analytics with the team and colleagues; and use data to focus efforts for maximum impact toward collective goals. 

  5. Understand the College’s strategic goals and how the social media coordinator’s work advances them.

Qualifications

  1. A bachelor's degree required and a minimum of two years of demonstrated success in building and sustaining an audience and a community in various social media channels

  2. A capacity to cultivate an authentic voice and discerning ear on behalf of an organization. A sense of humor and judgment about how to use it

  3. The ability to create videos and photos for social media channels in line with editorial and marketing goals 

  4. A commitment to antiracism and to diversity, equity and inclusion, and an understanding of how these values are demonstrated in social media and the digital landscape

  5. Creativity, nimbleness, and an ability to adapt

  6. The capacity to set priorities in a fast-paced environment

  7. Excellent judgment 

  8. A strong understanding of communications strategy

  9. A strong technology orientation and extensive knowledge of social media/digital publishing platforms, analytics, applications, and emerging technologies

  10. Familiarity with or ability to learn social scheduling and analytics software like Hootsuite/Hubspot

  11. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Google applications, Microsoft Office, Basecamp

This position requires successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
